Disclaimer: This calculator provides a general estimate for individuals only, using current resident/non-resident/working-holiday-maker rates, the Medicare levy (singles, no dependants), the Low Income Tax Offset, and standard HELP repayment thresholds. It does not account for dependants, family thresholds, other offsets, reportable fringe benefits, capital gains, business income, prior-year balances or your individual circumstances, and thresholds are indexed annually. It is not tax advice. For an accurate assessment, engage ApexLedger.

Tired of hunting for last year’s figures?

A tax estimate is only as good as the records behind it. We keep those records current all year, so your return is a handover β€” not an archaeology dig through a shoebox.

  • Income and expenses categorised as they happen, not reconstructed in October
  • Receipts captured and attached to the transaction they belong to
  • Deduction records kept to the standard your registered agent expects
  • A year-end pack that answers the questions before they’re asked

Fixed monthly fee from $199 +GST. We prepare; your registered agent lodges.

GST calculator & ABN checker

Work out the GST in a price, check whether you need to register, and validate an ABN β€” free, no sign-up. Everything below is general information based only on what you enter; for advice on your situation, talk to us or your registered agent.

GST in a price

GST is 10% of the GST-exclusive value. In a GST-inclusive price, the GST is one-eleventh (A New Tax System (GST) Act 1999).

Assumes the whole amount relates to a taxable supply. GST-free and input-taxed amounts have no GST in them β€” see the guide below.

GST registration check

Registration is required once your GST turnover meets the threshold β€” $75,000, or $150,000 for not-for-profits (s. 23-15). Taxi and ride-share drivers must register from the first dollar (Div 144).

GST turnover has its own definition (it excludes GST itself, input-taxed supplies and some other items) β€” based on your inputs only. Registering can also be worthwhile voluntarily to claim credits; that's a conversation, not a calculator.

Validate an ABN

Checks the number against the official ABN checksum, then looks it up on the Australian Business Register. Handy before you pay a new supplier β€” no valid ABN can mean you must withhold 47% from their payment.

Checksum tells you the number is well-formed; the register tells you it's real, active and GST-registered. Data via the ABR web services / ABN Lookup.

Not everything has GST in it

The GST Act sorts supplies into three buckets β€” and the bucket decides both the GST on your sales and the credits on your purchases.

Taxable β€” 10%

The default (s. 9-5): most goods and services sold by a GST-registered business in Australia. You charge 10% GST and claim credits on related purchases.

GST-free β€” 0%, credits OK

No GST on the sale, but you still claim input tax credits (Div 38): most basic food, most health and medical services, most education courses, and exports.

Input-taxed β€” 0%, no credits

No GST on the sale and no credits on related purchases (Div 40): financial supplies (lending, shares) and residential rent are the big two.

These tools give general information only, based on the information you enter β€” they don't consider your full circumstances, and they're not tax, legal or financial advice. GST has edges these tools don't reach (margin scheme, mixed supplies, adjustments, second-hand goods, agency…). ApexLedger is a bookkeeping and management-accounting practice, not a registered tax or BAS agent β€” for advice or lodgement, speak to a registered agent. What we do brilliantly: keep your books GST-coded and reconciled so all of this is already right, every month.

Stop guessing at GST codes

Most GST errors are coding errors β€” a GST-free supply coded as taxable, or a credit claimed on an input-taxed cost. We code every transaction as it lands and reconcile before each cycle.

  • Bank feeds and receipt capture, so nothing is entered twice
  • GST treatment reviewed transaction by transaction, not at the deadline
  • BAS-ready figures prepared each cycle for your registered agent to lodge
  • Supplier ABNs checked, so no-ABN withholding never catches you out

Capital gains tax calculator

Shares, property, crypto or anything else β€” work out your capital gain, the 12-month discount, and the tax. General information based only on what you enter β€” CGT has many special rules (see the notes below).

Fill in the sale details to see the calculation.

Worth knowing
  • Main residence: your own home is generally exempt (full or partial).
  • Pre-CGT: assets acquired before 20 September 1985 are outside CGT.
  • Ordering matters: capital losses reduce the gain before the discount is applied.
  • 12-month rule: the discount needs ownership of more than 12 months.
  • Losses only offset capital gains β€” they carry forward, never against salary.

Cost base is a record-keeping problem

The hardest part of a capital gain is proving the cost base years later β€” the purchase, the improvements, the fees. We maintain an asset register so the number is there when you sell.

  • Asset register with purchase dates, costs and improvement spend
  • Contracts, settlement statements and brokerage filed in your document vault
  • Improvements tracked separately from repairs β€” they land in different places
  • Everything handed over in one pack when a disposal happens

Fixed monthly fee from $199 +GST. We prepare; your registered agent lodges.

Division 7A calculator

Borrowed money from your own company? Division 7A treats unpaid company loans to shareholders (and their associates) as deemed dividends unless the loan is on complying terms and you make the minimum yearly repayment. Work out both below β€” based only on what you enter.

The benchmark rate changes every year β€” the figure above is the 2024-25 rate. Check the current year's rate on the ATO website and adjust.

Enter the loan details to see the minimum repayment.

How Division 7A bites
  • No complying loan agreement in place by the company's lodgment day β†’ the whole loan can be a deemed, unfrankable dividend (s. 109D).
  • Complying loan but repayment short β†’ the shortfall below the minimum yearly repayment is the deemed dividend (s. 109E).
  • Deemed dividends are capped at the company's distributable surplus.
  • Repayments made by simply borrowing again from the company generally don't count.
  • Payments and debt forgiveness by a private company can be caught too β€” not just loans.

Loan accounts shouldn’t surprise you in May

Division 7A problems are almost always discovered too late. We track shareholder loan accounts monthly, so the minimum repayment is a plan rather than a panic.

  • Shareholder and director loan accounts reconciled every month
  • Minimum yearly repayment calculated early, not at lodgment day
  • Drawings separated from wages, dividends and genuine reimbursements
  • A clear position for your registered agent before year end

Fixed monthly fee from $199 +GST. We prepare; your registered agent lodges.

FBT calculator

Fringe benefits tax, benefit by benefit β€” cars, parking, loans, expenses and meals (FBT year runs 1 April – 31 March; rate 47%). Pick a benefit type, and remember: general information based only on what you enter. Chapter numbers refer to the ATO's FBT guide for employers.

Enter the details to see the FBT.

Before you pay FBT, check the exemptions
  • Minor benefits β€” under $300 (GST-inclusive), provided infrequently and irregularly β†’ generally exempt (ch 20).
  • Work tools β€” portable devices, protective clothing, tools of trade used mainly for work β†’ exempt (ch 20).
  • Otherwise deductible β€” if the employee could have claimed the expense as a deduction themselves, the taxable value drops by that portion (declaration required).
  • Records β€” logbooks (12 weeks, valid 5 FBT years), odometer readings, employee declarations. Good records are the whole game β€” that's the part we do.

FBT is won or lost on records

The difference between the statutory and operating cost method is often thousands β€” but you can only choose the cheaper one if the logbook and cost records exist. We maintain them through the year.

  • Benefit register maintained per employee, per FBT year
  • Logbooks, odometer readings and declarations chased and filed
  • Running costs captured against each vehicle as they’re paid
  • Working papers ready for your registered agent to lodge the return

Fixed monthly fee from $199 +GST. We prepare; your registered agent lodges.
